Villa la Madonnina: CHRISTMAS and winter at the Amalfi coast

Christmas on the Amalfi coast is a magic experience. See how the local people celebrate Christmas, with cribs - some of them several hundred years old - in the churches and many private homes and  with fireworks. See in Atrani (picturesque town close to Amalfi) the star descending from the mountain to the church. Visit the famous christmas market in Napels where they sell all kinds of figures representing the holy family, sheep, saints.... for the cribs. Or watch the midnight mess in the Grotta della Smeralda where 200 divers visit the underwater crib. See the historical costume parade 25th and 26th December. Villa la Madonnina is a perfect home for a vacation in the colder period. Built as a whole year family home,  you find not only central heating in all rooms but also a cozy drawing room with an antique fireplace.  Often you can even sit outside in the well protected loggia. The villa is also perfectly positioned to watch impressive waves hitting the rocks in the bay  below.

Some of the most brilliant days with incredible colors and views are found in winter. But the weather changes quite often and windy days with high waves are also typical for this period. I especially love to watch the high waves when they storm against the cliff and the small bay below the villa. Its very impressive. From Christmas to beginning of March nativity sets are displayed both in the different towns, in churches and in private homes.
Especially interesting are the cribs in Praiano (see photos),  which can be seen the whole year. Around Christmas however they are beautifully illuminated. They show landscapes with churches,  houses, the people at work (like fishermen with their nets). They can be found alongside the main road - the Amalfitana - between the villa and the next village Praiano. Some are 15 m (45 ft) long and 3 m (9 ft) broad.  Very nicely done.
